Sir Walter Scott, a Tough Pill to Swallow?

Reading Balzac most definitely leaves the impression that the French of the early 19th century had a serious complex about Sir Walter Scott -- a world in which the British had produced the day's biggest international literary star was a world gone wrong.

It would follow that Balzac may have seen himself as the answer to this most unfortunate problem.
